bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 USA IN BAHRAIN 17 Enduring Allies For over 80 years, the United States and Bahrain have shared a strategic and enduring relationship rooted in diplomacy, defence and mutual respect. From early diplomatic ties to today’s extensive cooperation, the partnership continues to thrive across military, economic and cultural spheres. The formal relationship between the United States and Bahrain began in 1947 with the establishment of Naval Support Activity Bahrain. Bahrain gained independence in 1971, and the two nations quickly established full diplomatic relations. Since then, the US Embassy in Bahrain has served as a hub for strengthening bilateral ties. A cornerstone of this relationship is defence cooperation. Bahrain hosts the United States Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) and the Fifth Fleet headquarters, a vital command centre for operations across the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. Established in 1995, the presence of NAVCENT in Bahrain symbolises the trust and strategic alignment between both countries. This partnership supports regional security and maritime stability and serves as a key deterrent against shared threats. Beyond defence, the US and Bahrain enjoy robust economic and educational ties. In 2006, Bahrain became the first Gulf nation to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States, boosting trade and investment. Peopleto-people connections have flourished through educational exchanges, English-language learning initiatives and cultural programmes hosted by the US Embassy. Bahrain’s role as a moderate voice in the region and its commitment to reform and tolerance have positioned it as a valued partner. Today, US–Bahrain relations continue to evolve, anchored in shared values, strategic interests and an unwavering commitment to regional peace. As both nations look to the future, their collaboration remains a model for enduring friendship and mutual progress.

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 USA IN BAHRAIN 18 Your Excellency, this is your fourth July 4 in Bahrain as the US Ambassador. How have US-Bahrain relations grown during your time as Ambassador? It has been a tremendous honour to serve as US Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, and over the past three and a half years, I’ve witnessed remarkable growth in our bilateral relationship. Our countries have long been close partners, but during my tenure across two US administrations, we’ve elevated that cooperation. This progress is best demonstrated by the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement, which we signed in 2023 and has become a cornerstone of our modern partnership. It reflects a shared commitment to regional stability and prosperity – not just for our two countries, but for the broader Middle East. This year, we saw that agreement expand to include the United Kingdom, and we look forward to welcoming other partners. Economically, we’ve strengthened our commercial ties through initiatives like the US Trade Zone and expanded partnerships between American companies and Bahraini firms. I’ve been particularly proud to see Bahraini and American entrepreneurs, researchers and innovators working together on everything from energy exploration to digital infrastructure and space science. President Trump’s May visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates demonstrates the priority the Administration places on ties with the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. In what areas do you see the greatest potential for future collaboration between our two nations? We’ve seen exciting new areas of cooperation emerge – most recently in space. Bahrain’s successful launch of the Al Munther satellite aboard a US SpaceX rocket marked a new chapter in scientific collaboration. We are eager to explore additional avenues in space cooperation, including the possibility of working together to put a Bahraini into space. The Trump Administration is committed to ensuring the United States remains the global leader in space science, and we want to work with Bahrain in that effort. Given the longstanding strategic partnership, how does the US Embassy plan to further support Bahrain’s role in promoting regional security and stability? At the 2024 Manama Dialogue, we witnessed the United Kingdom join the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA), marking a significant milestone in trilateral cooperation. This development underscores our collective commitment to not only deepening bilateral ties but also forging a broader, integrated security and economic framework that strengthens regional stability and prosperity. By expanding C-SIPA to include the UK, we are laying the groundwork for more robust collaboration on shared challenges – whether in maritime security, technological innovation or economic development – paving the way for a more secure and resilient Gulf region. Through its work and priorities during its presidency of the Arab League, Bahrain has clearly demonstrated its commitment to peace. The United States looks forward to working intensively on peace and stability with Bahrain during its 2026-2027 term on the United Nations Security Council. Congratulations to Bahrain for its overwhelming victory in being elected to the Council! As the United States of America marks another Independence Day, His Excellency Steven C. Bondy, US Ambassador to Bahrain, reflects on the depth of US–Bahrain ties, emerging avenues of cooperation and the shared values shaping this enduring partnership. bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 USA IN BAHRAIN 19 Education and cultural exchange have historically played a strong role in US– Bahrain relations. What efforts are being made to expand these programmes? We currently have over 800 Bahraini alumni of Embassy exchange programmes such as Fulbright, International Visitor Leadership Programme and YES student exchange. This is a dynamic group of people working across all sectors in Bahrain, and we work with them to develop a strong network, so these alumni can work with and learn from one another. We continue to support these exchanges to share ideas and build lasting relationships. A highlight of each year is meeting the outstanding Bahraini recipients of the Crown Prince International Scholarship. These talented students and future leaders attend some of the United States’ most prestigious universities, gaining invaluable knowledge and experience that they bring back to Bahrain to contribute to the Kingdom’s continued growth and prosperity. We’ve seen the number of recipients grow from 10 to 20, with many of those choosing to study in the United States. With each new cohort, they lay the foundation for future collaboration between our nations and peoples. How is the US Embassy engaging with Bahrain’s youth and civil society to foster mutual understanding and cooperation? We see young people as the future of our partnership and are investing in their success and skills development through education, exchange, and dialogue. Programmes like the Fulbright Programme, MEPI Student Leaders and YES high school exchange programme give Bahraini youth first-hand experience in the United States and help them develop skills that contribute to their communities here in Bahrain. In April, Phil Murphy, the Governor of my home state of New Jersey, led a trade and education delegation to Bahrain. The New Jersey Economic Development Authority and Bahrain’s Masari Association signed an agreement for new Bahraini entrants to the workforce to enjoy internships at New Jersey companies. We are working right now to activate this programme. What message would you like to share with the American expatriate community living and working in Bahrain? To my fellow Americans living and working in Bahrain, I want to express my deepest appreciation for the important role you play in strengthening the bonds between our two nations. You represent the best of America – innovation, creativity and grit – and your contributions build our security ties, create dynamic economic and commercial opportunities, and create lasting people-topeople bonds. Whether you’re serving at US Naval Forces Central Command, in business or in education, your daily interactions with Bahrainis foster understanding, friendship and the mutual respect that sustains this remarkable partnership. And I must add that all Americans in Bahrain know how fortunate they are to live in this beautiful Kingdom among friendly, open and welcoming Bahraini citizens. This truly is the Pearl of the Gulf! With Bahrain positioning itself as a regional hub for innovation and technology, how do you foresee American companies and institutions contributing to this vision? US firms bring world-class expertise in cuttingedge sectors like digital economy, fintech, Artificial Intelligence applications, energy, healthcare and advanced manufacturing, and we’re seeing increasing collaboration between American and Bahraini partners in these fields, to share knowledge and accelerate progress. Beyond the private sector, US universities and research institutions can offer invaluable insights and training to help Bahrain’s entrepreneurs and young professionals thrive. Lastly, what are your personal diplomatic priorities during your tenure in Bahrain, and what legacy do you hope to leave behind? I have always made it a priority to highlight our shared values and respect for one another, which strengthens our societies and underpins everything we do together. I have been asked many times what I think the key is to being a successful diplomat. I strongly believe a diplomat must demonstrate respect and enthusiasm for the local society and culture. Here in Bahrain, I have greatly enjoyed learning about Bahrain’s traditions and interacting daily with Bahraini citizens. What is the best thing about Bahrain? That’s an easy one – its people. As for my legacy, I hope to leave behind a vibrant and resilient US-Bahrain partnership – one that has made the United States safer, stronger and more prosperous through our friendship with our ally, Bahrain. Bahrainis and Americans can feel proud of what we have accomplished together and know there is much more we can do together to build on our success.

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 20 A Splash Celebration July heralds World Watercolour Month, a vibrant global artistic festivity conceived by Charlie O’Shields and supported by Doodlewash in 2016. Artists of all skill levels are invited to pick up brushes and join the 31‑day challenge: paint and post daily – or as often as you wish. Beyond creative exploration, the initiative champions arts education, benefitting the International Child Art Foundation, which helps nurture young creativity worldwide. As we celebrate USA in Bahrain, this American‑originated initiative underscores the global impact of US creativity and philanthropy. Bahraini readers are encouraged to join the challenge, blending local tradition with US‑born inspiration. Engaging in World Watercolour Month here, using the hashtag #WorldWatercolorMonth amplifies American soft‑power: promoting creativity, education and cross‑cultural dialogue. It provides an artistic bridge between US communities and Bahraini enthusiasts, advancing shared values of global citizenship, education and creative expression. World Watercolour Month celebrates spontaneity, creative growth and community. Participants can paint indoors or outdoors with friends, try new techniques, introduce children to the medium or simply resume a dormant art practice. Whether creating a daily masterpiece or sharing quick sketches, each stroke contributes to a kaleidoscope of global creativity while raising vital awareness for arts in education. The movement originated when Mr O’Shields noticed July lacked official recognition despite the passion surrounding watercolour. After submitting a petition – supported by over 18,000 annual applications – July was officially declared World Watercolour Month. Since then, sponsors, artist ambassadors and giveaways have joined the cause, with all profit and proceeds supporting ICAF during the month. The ethos is simple but powerful: embrace regular practice, enjoy the process and foster creativity in others. With daily prompts available, newcomers and seasoned painters alike find inspiration. Whether sharing personal work or celebrating peers, participants contribute to a global gallery, forging a supportive creative community. USA IN BAHRAIN

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 USA IN BAHRAIN 21 Empowerment Through Community Susie Bower, the President of the American Women’s Association (AWA) in Bahrain, outlines the impactful initiatives, cross-cultural connections and visions of charitable growth that continue to uplift Bahrain’s expat and local communities alike. Stepping into leadership often begins with a moment of opportunity. For Ms. Bower, her journey began when she was asked to temporarily fill the role of Recording Secretary. What followed was a deeper commitment to the organisation’s mission and a drive to offer longterm stability. “While AWA represents many nationalities, the President must be American,” she explains. “Knowing my family would remain in Bahrain for at least two more years, I felt a responsibility to bring a long-term vision to the organisation.” Under her leadership, AWA is prioritising the return of its flagship fundraiser, the Cherry Tree Trot, in 2026. “It’s a major event for community engagement and charitable giving, so we’re laying the groundwork early with strong committee leadership,” she says. AWA is also expanding its outreach by identifying new charities and community centres where members can volunteer. Alongside this, the team hopes to revive cherished traditions for members’ families and introduce fresh, engaging activities for today’s diverse membership. Although rooted in American identity, the AWA proudly reflects international diversity. “Our membership currently spans over 20 nationalities,” she shares. “We aim to provide familiarity, support and a deep appreciation for our host country.” AWA’s philanthropic mission remains central. “Every dollar raised is poured directly back into Bahrain,” she adds. “Our efforts are supported by generous local individuals and businesses who believe in what we do.” One standout moment from this year was a royal recognition. “Meeting His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to mark AWA’s 50th anniversary was a deeply meaningful milestone,” she says. “It reflected not just our longevity in Bahrain, but also our commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing women’s roles.” Collaboration remains vital to AWA’s work. Members volunteer with several local organisations, most recently completing a classroom renovation at the Hope Institute. Reflecting on her time, she adds: “What has stood out most is the way our members have come together during challenging times – like a family. That unity and resilience has been the most powerful change I’ve seen.” To women considering joining, her message is clear: “AWA is more than a social group. It’s a space for connection, purpose and community. Through clubs, tours and cultural experiences, members form lifelong bonds while making a meaningful difference.” She concludes with gratitude: “Thank you to Bahrain This Month for supporting our mission and helping us reach more women looking to find their place in this vibrant community.”

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 USA IN BAHRAIN 22 Grand Canyon Okay, we admit, you might have heard of this one. After all, this incredible natural attraction is one of the most visited places in the United States. Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon cuts deep into the landscape, creating dramatic cliff walls and ledges. Visitors standing on the rim of the canyon can see down to the canyon floor a mile below, and look out over the ridges and cliffs that run as far as the eye can see. Niagara Falls Situated along the Canada-US border, Niagara Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the world. The water from Lake Erie flows into Lake Ontario over these massive waterfalls, known for the great quantity of water that is constantly tumbling over the vertical drop. Niagara Falls is actually a set of three falls: It consists of the largest section, known as Horseshoe Falls, with a drop of 187 feet; a second section on the American side of the river, known as the American Falls, with a drop of 89 feet; and a much thinner section located next to the American Falls, known as Bridal Veil Falls, with a drop of 78 feet. Glacier National Park Named for the remnants of glaciers from the ice age, Glacier National Park is located on the border of Canada and Montana. It is often called the ‘Crown of the Continent,’ because of its dizzying array of natural beauty. A favourite spot among hikers, the park features a variety of trails for all skill levels, ranging from the easy Trail of the Cedars (home to towering and beautiful cedars) to the challenging Grinnell Glacier (which offers sweeping views). What’s more, the park boasts more than 700 lakes, numerous waterfalls and two mountain ranges, spread across more than 1 million acres that shelter a variety of wildlife.

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 USA IN BAHRAIN 23 Yosemite National Park Millions of people come to this Sierra Nevada wilderness each year to see jagged peaks, glaciers, lush meadows and some of the world’s tallest waterfalls. Spanning 1,200 square miles, Yosemite offers activities ranging from childfriendly to extreme. Massive granite slopes like Half Dome and El Capitan dominate the landscape, taunting rock climbers. Paddlers dip into lakes and rivers, drivers cruise the dramatic Tioga Road, and day hikers walk by sequoias and canyons. Backpackers take to the rugged John Muir trail, named for the writer who helped create the park in 1890. Yellowstone National Park With dramatic peaks and pristine lakes, Yellowstone National Park, mostly in Wyoming, is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Fun fact: it was America’s first national park and is bigger than Rhode Island! Multi-coloured pools swirl around hot springs; verdant forests weave past expansive meadows and volatile geysers launch streams of steaming water toward the sky. With so much unspoiled natural beauty, it’s no wonder why everyone suspected John Colter (a scout for explorers Lewis and Clark) was embellishing when he first described Yellowstone’s geothermal curiosities in 1807. While you traverse its 3,000-plus square miles of mountains, canyons, geysers and waterfalls, be prepared to share the trails with permanent residents like buffalo, elk and sometimes even grizzlies. Arches National Park Located north of Moab, Utah, Arches National Park is so named for the 2,000 wind-sculpted sandstone arches gracing the area – the largest such concentration in the world. The most famous of these is the iconic 52ft-tall Delicate Arch, whose image can be seen on Utah license plates, but Arches will amaze you with its sheer range of soaring pinnacles, massive rock fins and giant balanced rocks. Arches is also one of the few national parks where many of the top formations can be seen from the comfort of your car – perfect for those who want the sights without the sweat. Rocky Mountain National Park Rocky Mountain National Park in northern Colorado encompasses 415 square miles of breath-taking, protected mountain wilderness. With more than 300 miles of trails, panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks, picturesque meadows, valleys and meandering rivers, not to mention Trail Ridge Road (the highest continuous paved road in the United States, hitting 12,183ft in elevation), the choose-yourown-adventure options are endless. Hike it, bike it, fish it, climb it, drive it, camp it, photograph it … or all of the above. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park Visit Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park for a chance to get up close and personal with two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The latter continually erupts, which visitors can witness from multiple points in the park, including Crater Rim Drive and the famous Chain of Craters Road. The scenic lookout offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the ancient village of Kealakomo. Pacific Coast Highway The legendary Pacific Coast Highway was first started in the 1930s, and remains a marvel of human effort that hugs over 900km of California’s rugged and beautiful coastlines. It is one of the most astoundingly scenic roads in the world, meant to be traversed slowly, while gasping at the mountains, towering trees, expansive beaches and endless sky. It also affords travellers an unparalleled opportunity to dip into all the character California has to offer: pioneer outposts, surfing villages, farm-fresh foods, local wine, roadside kitsch, Hollywood glitz and bohemia.

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 INTERVIEW 26 Franco-Bahraini Synergy As France prepares to mark Bastille Day on July 14, His Excellency Eric Giraud-Telme, Ambassador of France to the Kingdom of Bahrain, reflects on key diplomatic milestones, cultural cooperation and the shared ambitions linking France and Bahrain. Your Excellency, Bastille Day is a momentous occasion in the French calendar. Could you share the significance of this day and any local collaborations planned to mark it in Bahrain? Bastille Day, celebrated every July 14, commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789 – a symbolic act that marked a turning point in French history and became a defining moment of the French Revolution. It represents our aspiration for freedom and continues to embody the values of liberty, equality and fraternity that shape the French Republic. Here in Bahrain, we celebrate Bastille Day with a reception that brings together members of the French community and our Bahraini partners. It is a festive yet meaningful occasion that honours the strength of our bilateral ties. This year’s celebration is themed France in the Future, with a focus on artificial intelligence – one of our key strategic priorities. We are also proud to partner with local institutions. The Bahrain Police Band will perform the French national anthem, and the evening’s music will be curated by Session, a DJ collective of talented Bahraini artists. These collaborations reflect our commitment to cultural exchange and community engagement. France and Bahrain share a long-standing friendship. What recent milestones highlight the strength of this relationship? A major milestone was the visit of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Paris this January, where he met President Macron at the Élysée Palace. This high-level engagement reaffirmed the strength of our political dialogue and opened new avenues of cooperation in strategic sectors such as energy, infrastructure and transportation. On the economic front, we welcomed delegations from MEDEF International and BPI France – both key players in supporting the global expansion of French businesses. Their interest underscores the appeal of the Bahraini market. Key sectors identified for collaboration include financial services, tourism, digital innovation and AI. How does the French Embassy promote cultural diplomacy in Bahrain, and what initiatives can we look forward to? Cultural diplomacy is central to our mission. We support cooperation in cinema, fashion, AI and sustainable development through artist residencies, training programmes and scholarships. France will lead an AI workshop during Youth City 2030 and host Fashion Days this autumn – a continuation of the popular Paris to Manama Fashion Week – which will feature masterclasses and seminars with French experts. We are also launching the second edition of the 48-Hour Film Challenge to nurture emerging

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 INTERVIEW 27 Bahraini filmmakers. Our cultural calendar includes participation in major festivals like Spring of Culture and the Bahrain International Music Festival. A highlight to mark is the upcoming jazz fusion concert by renowned French musician Renaud Garcia-Fons on October 8. In terms of economic cooperation, what sectors show the greatest promise for further collaboration between France and Bahrain? Our economic partnership is dynamic and expanding. In 2024, bilateral trade reached €422 million – a clear sign of mutual trust and potential. One key area is energy. The agreement between TotalEnergies and Bapco Energies is a strong example of how French expertise is contributing to Bahrain’s Vision 2030. We also see strong prospects in digital innovation, financial services, tourism and sustainable development. The French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bahrain plays a vital role in linking companies, encouraging investment and providing support services. Education is another priority. Since 2011, ESSEC Business School and Arabian Gulf University have jointly offered an MBA programme. In 2025, the HEC ‘Accelerating Women’s Leadership’ programme, supported by Tamkeen, trained 90 Bahraini women. We aim to continue deepening these educational partnerships. France has a significant presence in the Gulf through business, defence and diplomacy. How would you describe its role in fostering regional cooperation? France considers the Gulf countries strategic partners for regional stability, multilateralism and shared security. Our approach is based on dialogue and responsibility. Defence and security cooperation with Bahrain is strong – particularly in maritime security. As members of the Combined Maritime Forces headquartered in Bahrain, we collaborate closely on shared objectives. France is also engaged diplomatically in efforts to promote peace in the region. President Macron has been active in urging the cessation of hostilities between Iran and Israel, advocating a return to diplomatic negotiations on ballistic and nuclear issues. We are deeply concerned about the situation in Gaza and have called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages and unimpeded humanitarian access. France welcomes the Arab plan for Gaza’s reconstruction and continues to support a twostate solution – the only sustainable path to peace. We also congratulate Bahrain on its election to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member. This presents further opportunities for cooperation on multilateral issues and global challenges. France’s regular participation in the Manama Dialogue reflects our commitment to regional discourse. Since your appointment to Bahrain, what priorities have guided your diplomatic mission? Since my arrival, I have prioritised strengthening economic, educational and cultural ties. Engaging Bahrain’s youth is particularly important. The Kingdom’s young people are talented and ambitious, and we aim to enhance academic, linguistic and professional connections with France. The French language is key to this mission. Since 2009, it has been taught in Bahraini secondary schools. We plan to expand this, supported by the Lycée Français MLF and the Alliance Française. Environmental cooperation is another area of focus. France is eager to assist Bahrain’s ecological transition through knowledge exchange and industrial partnerships, particularly in renewables and sustainability. We’ve also initiated collaborations in areas such as sports – following the signing of an MoU last December – and arbitration, which continues to develop. How has your fluency in Arabic influenced your work across the Gulf? Arabic reflects my long-standing interest in the Arab world. While my level is modest, speaking Arabic enables me to better understand local cultures and connect more directly with people. It fosters a more personal form of diplomacy and allows me to appreciate nuances in communication. Learning Bahraini-specific expressions has also helped me feel more integrated in daily interactions. What personal reflections would you share about your time in Bahrain? Are there aspects of Bahraini hospitality or culture that stand out to you and the French community? Living in Bahrain has been a rewarding personal and professional experience. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the people. In my limited free time, I enjoy exploring the Kingdom’s heritage – archaeological sites, traditional souqs and the historical quarters of Muharraq. I especially enjoyed Muharraq Nights on the Pearling Path last December. And of course, I’ve developed a real appreciation for the local cuisine. Bahraini tikka has quickly become a favourite of mine – a small but genuine pleasure of everyday life here.

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 INTERVIEW 28 Shared Vision, Stronger Bonds As Algeria celebrates its Independence Day, the nation’s Ambassador to Bahrain, His Excellency Dr. Braham Mahmoud, reflects on the profound historical bonds, growing economic opportunities and shared diplomatic goals shaping Algeria’s ever-deepening partnership with the Kingdom. Thanks for the opportunity to sit with you, Excellency. Firstly, can you share your impressions of the Kingdom and how your diplomatic experience here has shaped your vision for Algeria–Bahrain relations? First of all, thank you very much for this enjoyable opportunity your magazine has given me to discuss issues concerning my mission in Bahrain and my emotional connection to this dear and brotherly country. Before arriving, I had heard a great deal about this civilised nation, whose people are known for their solidarity and warmth toward fellow Arab and Islamic nations, as well as other peaceloving countries. I was pleasantly surprised upon arrival to discover how Algeria holds a strong place in the collective imagination of Bahrainis. Many among the Kingdom’s cultural, academic and political elites know Algeria well – some having lived there – and speak of it with heartfelt nostalgia. Bilateral relations between Algeria and Bahrain have spanned decades. What are the key areas of cooperation currently being pursued? As we prepare to celebrate our Independence Day on July 5 – a date commemorating years of armed struggle and heroic resistance – I must acknowledge the historic solidarity shown by Bahrain’s leadership and people during Algeria’s Liberation Revolution. They not only followed the developments with great interest, but also actively supported our cause despite difficult regional circumstances at the time. With such a foundation of trust and mutual goodwill, I am deeply motivated to strengthen and expand this relationship. Politically, our countries enjoy excellent relations, guided by the wise leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, alongside His Excellency, our President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. However, I also acknowledge the logistical and structural limitations – such as geographical distance, absence of direct flights and limited mutual economic visibility – that need to be addressed. Encouragingly, we are seeing an increase in Bahraini visitors to Algeria, both for tourism and investment. The Embassy is also launching targeted initiatives across economic and industrial sectors that I believe will yield tangible results.

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 INTERVIEW 29 Economic diversification is a shared priority for both Algeria and Bahrain. Are there specific sectors you believe are ripe for collaboration? Indeed, economic diversification is central to both our national strategies. Algeria’s wealth of natural resources — including rare earths, oil and gas — makes it a key partner in helping Bahrain achieve food security and resource-backed industrial growth. Conversely, Bahrain’s industrial expertise presents opportunities for joint ventures in fields such as aluminium smelting, enabling Algeria to develop exports while supporting Bahrain’s production capacity. Tourism is another promising area. Algeria boasts 1,600km of Mediterranean coastline and diverse, unspoiled landscapes. Coupled with Bahrain’s experience in the hospitality sector, there is immense potential for synergy in tourism development and marketing. Trade between our countries already approaches USD1 billion, including strong contributions from financial and banking sectors. A major development on the horizon is Algeria’s planned maritime line to the Gulf, which will include Bahrain as a key port. We are also awaiting feedback on draft economic agreements, including the establishment of a Bahraini–Algerian Business Council, which could further cement this partnership. Cultural diplomacy often plays a vital role in building mutual understanding. Could you tell us about recent or upcoming initiatives by the Algerian Embassy? We have prioritised cultural diplomacy through various initiatives. The Embassy has marked Algerian national holidays with public celebrations and published informative articles across media platforms. On December 24, 2024, I had the honour of delivering a lecture on modern Algerian history at the Bahrain Culture and Antiquities Association, which received a warm and engaged response. We have also participated in cultural exhibitions such as The Diplomatic Fair, where we showcased Algerian-themed products with proceeds going to charity. Going forward, the establishment of our new Algerian diplomatic complex in Bahrain’s diplomatic district will provide much-needed infrastructure to host large-scale cultural and economic events. As both countries are members of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, how do you envision Bahrain and Algeria aligning on regional and international platforms? Algeria and Bahrain both seek peace and stability across the Arab world. The Arab League’s 2002 Peace Initiative could have laid the groundwork for this, had it been fully embraced. These tensions and conflicts in the region are not due to an Arab reluctance for peace, but to external obstinance. Algeria’s position, and I believe Bahrain’s too, remains firmly committed to upholding the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people through peaceful and just resolutions. Approximately how many Algerians live in Bahrain, and in what fields do they predominantly work? The Algerian community in Bahrain is relatively small, comprising around 500 individuals. However, they represent a highly qualified demographic, excelling in fields such as scientific research, medicine, petroleum engineering and education. Their professionalism, integrity and dedication are well recognised and contribute positively to the local landscape. Finally, on a personal note, what aspects of Bahraini culture or daily life have resonated most with you during your tenure? What would you say to Algerians considering a visit to the Kingdom? What has struck me most is the noble character of the Bahraini people – their openness, generosity and their deep sense of Arab national consciousness. Their culture is rich, ancient and remarkably advanced across economic, cultural and educational domains. What I personally admire is their kindness, simplicity in interactions and their ever-present readiness to help, serve others and prioritise community welfare. To Algerians considering a visit, I would say: you will find in Bahrain not only a beautiful country but a welcoming home away from home.
