Bahrain This Month - July 2025

bahrainthismonth.com | JULY 2025 USA IN BAHRAIN 21 Empowerment Through Community Susie Bower, the President of the American Women’s Association (AWA) in Bahrain, outlines the impactful initiatives, cross-cultural connections and visions of charitable growth that continue to uplift Bahrain’s expat and local communities alike. Stepping into leadership often begins with a moment of opportunity. For Ms. Bower, her journey began when she was asked to temporarily fill the role of Recording Secretary. What followed was a deeper commitment to the organisation’s mission and a drive to offer longterm stability. “While AWA represents many nationalities, the President must be American,” she explains. “Knowing my family would remain in Bahrain for at least two more years, I felt a responsibility to bring a long-term vision to the organisation.” Under her leadership, AWA is prioritising the return of its flagship fundraiser, the Cherry Tree Trot, in 2026. “It’s a major event for community engagement and charitable giving, so we’re laying the groundwork early with strong committee leadership,” she says. AWA is also expanding its outreach by identifying new charities and community centres where members can volunteer. Alongside this, the team hopes to revive cherished traditions for members’ families and introduce fresh, engaging activities for today’s diverse membership. Although rooted in American identity, the AWA proudly reflects international diversity. “Our membership currently spans over 20 nationalities,” she shares. “We aim to provide familiarity, support and a deep appreciation for our host country.” AWA’s philanthropic mission remains central. “Every dollar raised is poured directly back into Bahrain,” she adds. “Our efforts are supported by generous local individuals and businesses who believe in what we do.” One standout moment from this year was a royal recognition. “Meeting His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to mark AWA’s 50th anniversary was a deeply meaningful milestone,” she says. “It reflected not just our longevity in Bahrain, but also our commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing women’s roles.” Collaboration remains vital to AWA’s work. Members volunteer with several local organisations, most recently completing a classroom renovation at the Hope Institute. Reflecting on her time, she adds: “What has stood out most is the way our members have come together during challenging times – like a family. That unity and resilience has been the most powerful change I’ve seen.” To women considering joining, her message is clear: “AWA is more than a social group. It’s a space for connection, purpose and community. Through clubs, tours and cultural experiences, members form lifelong bonds while making a meaningful difference.” She concludes with gratitude: “Thank you to Bahrain This Month for supporting our mission and helping us reach more women looking to find their place in this vibrant community.”
