bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 INTERVIEW 14 Bridging Bangladesh & Bahrain As the new Ambassador of Bangladesh to Bahrain, what are your key diplomatic priorities during your tenure? Before I begin, I would like to express my utmost respect and greetings to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince & Prime Minister, and the people of Bahrain for their warm hospitality. My foremost priority is to elevate the already strong bilateral ties between Bangladesh and Bahrain. This includes intensifying collaboration across trade, investment and cultural exchange. A key focus will be on enhancing the welfare and image of the Bangladeshi community in Bahrain. I believe in building both professional and personal relationships. I aim to strengthen institutional linkages and finalise pending bilateral instruments to create a robust framework for future cooperation. How do you plan to enhance bilateral relations, particularly in trade, labour and culture? Today, Bangladesh’s GDP is the 35th largest in the world in nominal terms (nearly USD 470 billion), and 25th largest by purchasing power parity (USD 1.8 trillion) according to the latest statistics from the IMF. Our GDP has been witnessing a steady growth of 4-5% each year, and our exports have been between USD 40 and 50 billion for the past few years, with RMG being one of the main contributors. We have witnessed a significant growth in our international trade over the past decade. Our major trading partners include many European countries, US, China, India, and increasingly, countries in the Middle East. Trade between Bangladesh and Bahrain is estimated at around USD50 million. However, there is potential for growth since Bahrain imports nearly all goods and Bangladesh’s international trade has grown significantly. We want to diversify our export basket and increase trade volume through business-to-business engagements and addressing trade barriers. Bangladesh is well positioned to meet the needs of the Bahraini market and neighbouring countries. Also, Bahrain’s FTA with the US presents an opportunity for Bangladesh to use Bahrain as a route to the American market. Our economy has demonstrated sustained growth in recent years, thereby fostering a favourable environment for both import and export activities. We are particularly proud of our growing RMG sector, which is still the second largest in the world. We remain optimistic about the prospect of achieving the top global ranking in RMG, especially considering the current trade dynamics, including the imposition of high tariffs on China by the US, a nation that is one of our largest importers of RMG and textiles. Moreover, our growing agricultural and pharmaceutical industries are also ripe for collaboration. We are global exporters of various agricultural goods and pharmaceutical products, and we are very keen to begin exporting them to Bahrain as well. In this exclusive interview with Kristian Harrison, His Excellency Md. Rais Hasan Sarower, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Bahrain, reflects on a distinguished career that includes postings in Turkey, Malaysia, Italy and the UAE; and discusses the current state of relations between the two nations.

bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 INTERVIEW 15 On labour, we will continue to work with Bahraini authorities to ensure the well-being and fair treatment of our workforce. Once the market reopens, our honest, skilled workers can contribute significantly to both nations’ economies. Our total population exceeds 170 million with over one-third being the youth. We are taking great measures to enhance the skills and development of our youth to ensure that they are well-prepared for the evolving global job market, encourage innovation, and actively contribute to the nation’s sustained economic growth and prosperity. For cultural exchange, we plan to showcase Bangladesh’s heritage through events, collaborations with Bahraini institutions and support for our community’s cultural presence. We are also exploring joint initiatives in the fields of art, literature and heritage preservation. What initiatives will the Embassy take to support the Bangladeshi community in Bahrain? With about 138,000 Bangladeshis in Bahrain, we are the second largest expat community here. The Embassy is committed to providing consular and welfare support through mobile camps and regular Open Houses. We aim to foster community spirit, encourage integration into Bahraini society, and advocate for rights and well-being. Ongoing awareness programmes ensure that our community is well-informed. We also provide free medical care and legal counselling through key partners. We are exploring new ways to enhance support, including partnerships with NGOs and community groups to offer a broader assistance network. We also plan to launch initiatives that promote language learning, vocational training and social cohesion. What strategies are in place to attract Bahraini investment into Bangladesh? Bangladesh is focused on creating an investor-friendly environment. The government is streamlining processes to support foreign ventures. Our priority is to create a clear pathway for Bahraini investment by showcasing Bangladesh’s economy, location and policies. Sectors like garments, textiles, pharmaceuticals, ICT and agriculture are strong opportunities. I plan to work closely with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Bahrain Economic Development Board to foster business links and joint ventures. This includes trade fairs, seminars, high-level visits and detailed investment information. Our aim is not just to attract capital but also to foster technology transfer, sustainable practices and long-term business partnerships that benefit both nations. Are there any planned high-level visits or agreements you can share? We aim to boost trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchange. More bilateral visits would strengthen ties. Watch the Video Our first Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) took place in Manama on 20 November 2022. It was productive and we look forward to hosting the second round in Dhaka. Several bilateral instruments are in the pipeline, including MoUs and agreements on visa exemptions for diplomats, bilateral cooperation commissions, trade, defence, civil service, manpower, and cultural exchange. We hope to sign a few of these during the second FOC. These visits not only symbolise our commitment to diplomacy but also serve as a platform for new partnerships and mutual understanding. What message would you like to convey to the Bangladeshi community and your Bahraini counterparts? To my fellow Bangladeshis: I commend your hard work, which contributes to both Bangladesh and Bahrain. Please use proper channels to remit money, respect local laws, and act as proud ambassadors of our nation. The Embassy is here for you. To our Bahraini friends and colleagues: thank you for your warm welcome. I am committed to strengthening our friendship and working together for prosperity, development and mutual benefit. Let us continue to build a bridge of cooperation, trust and mutual respect. May the brotherhood and friendship between Bangladesh and Bahrain live long! Cut bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 TOP CHEFS 19 Chef's Executive Chef David Miras of Downtown Rotana, Manama draws from French culinary roots, Belgian tradition and Bahraini ingredients to craft refined, soulful dishes – including his signature Seafood Waterzooï. How would you describe yourself as a chef in three words? Passionate, meticulous and mentor! Who or what has been the biggest inspiration in your culinary journey? My greatest inspiration dates back to my time at culinary school in France, where I had the privilege of learning from some truly remarkable instructors. One mentor in particular, Jean Blaret, left a lasting impression on me. In 2022, I experienced a full-circle moment when I returned to that same school, not as a student but as a teacher, and had the honour of working alongside him. Collaborating with someone who once guided me was both humbling and inspiring. To this day, he remains one of my biggest influences. What is your signature dish, and what makes it special? My signature dish is Seafood Waterzooï. It’s a traditional recipe from the regions of Belgium and Northern France, where culinary heritage flows seamlessly across the border. This dish captures the essence of true cooking, simplicity layered with depth. It celebrates the richness of honest flavours, brought to life by the finest local seafood and the humblest regional vegetables. Rooted in heritage and integrity, it’s a dish that tells a story and one I’m proud to share. What is your ultimate comfort food? Whatever my wife puts in front of me on my days off! If you weren’t a chef, what would you be? I definitely think I’d be a teacher. What local Bahraini ingredient do you love working with most, and why? Black lime (lumee) is my favourite. It offers a bold, earthy acidity that can completely transform a dish, whether savoury or sweet. Distinctly Bahraini, it adds depth, character and a touch of intrigue to every plate. It’s a small ingredient with a remarkably powerful voice. Who is the most memorable person you’ve ever cooked for, and why? One of the most memorable experiences was cooking for John Travolta and his mother during their stay at a resort I used to work for in Dubai. What truly stood out was how incredibly downto-earth they both were. Warm, approachable and genuinely respectful to every member of the team. They brought an unexpected sense of humility that made the experience special and unforgettable. @chefdavidmiras Watch the Video

bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 TOP CHEFS 20 For Mr. Resnik, co-founder of The Hierophant Group, the opening of Brasero Atlántico Bahrain marks more than just another restaurant launch. “My focus is on the guest experience,” he explains. “The feedback we hear at the table, online or from guests who return again and again – that’s what matters to me.” Mr. Resnik, who spent 24 years working with Wolfgang Puck, brings a deeply personal ethos to hospitality. “Every guest is a gift,” he says. “I’m grateful for each one who chooses to dine with us – whether for a drink, an empanada or a full meal.” Food with Soul Describing the cuisine as “soulful and unpretentious,” Mr. Resnik explains that Brasero’s identity is shaped by Buenos Aires, immigration stories and childhood memories. Rooted in Passion Brasero Atlántico Bahrain co-founder Alex Resnik shares his philosophy on food, service and community as he opens the Bahrain outpost of his Buenos Aires-inspired restaurant. “We’re humble and honest in our approach,” he says. “It’s not fine dining. It’s rooted food, served with generosity.” The restaurant’s design reflects this philosophy: an open kitchen, countertop seating and a vinyl-only music policy create an immersive, relaxed atmosphere. “We prep, cook and serve in full view. Guests love being part of the action.” Choosing Bahrain The decision to open in Bahrain was personal. “My first visit to the country was in 2013. I stayed at the Sheraton Bahrain Hotel then, so bringing this project to the newly-renovated property felt natural,” says Mr. Resnik. He credits the hotel’s owners and team for their openness: “They gave us creative freedom and supported the vision. What stood out most to me was the arrival experience for guests. The property offers space, elegance and a warm welcome.” Passing the Torch Now that the restaurant is open, Mr. Resnik is stepping back to let his team take centre stage. “Rodrigo Carvalho, our General Manager, and Executive Chef James Martin are the true leaders of this project,” he says. “They are the ones who will shape relationships and build loyalty.” He adds: “When I interviewed staff, I told them that I wanted people in the community to know their names. That’s how we create something lasting.” Next Steps In the coming year, Brasero Atlántico will continue evolving its menu with seasonal updates and new cuts of beef. The team also plans to host several events, featuring guest chefs and bartenders connected to their awardwinning Florería Atlántico bar. The restaurant’s terrace is expected to open in the cooler months, offering sweeping views of Manama. “The skyline, the lights, the energy – it’s a beautiful setting,” says Mr. Resnik. Reflecting on his time in Bahrain, he adds: “This place feels like home. We’ve been embraced by the community, and we’re committed to growing with it – with warmth, care and consistency.”

bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 DINING 21 Fire, Flavour, Fusion Brasero Atlántico has officially opened its doors atop the Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, bringing a bold new take on Argentine cuisine to Manama. The rooftop lounge promises fire-kissed flavours and vibrant beverages in an atmospheric setting. Manama’s culinary scene reaches new heights with Brasero Atlántico, an Argentine rooftop restaurant and lounge that celebrates tradition, fire and flavour. Perched above the recently re-opened Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, this new hotspot offers panoramic views of the city skyline and an immersive dining experience rooted in the rich culinary heritage of Argentina. The concept centres around ‘a las brasas,’ the age-old technique of cooking over a wood fire, reflecting the rustic methods brought to the Rio de la Plata region by immigrants who crossed the Atlantic. Guests can expect expertly grilled meats, bold flavours, and an ambience that balances elegance with the spirited energy of Buenos Aires. Beyond the food, Brasero Atlántico features a curated drinks menu that includes organic cocktails and mocktails crafted with native grapes and artisanal ingredients sourced from Argentina and beyond. Each drink tells a story – whether of a small vineyard or a cultural tradition passed down through generations. Alex Resnik, co-founder of The Hierophant Group, says: “Brasero Atlántico Bahrain invites guests on a vibrant journey that blends Argentine soul with Bahraini warmth.” From the creators of Argentina’s famed Florería Atlántico, this new dining destination is a heartfelt fusion of cultures, inviting diners to savour the essence of Argentina in every bite and sip. From Buenos Aires to Bahrain, savor wood-fired meats, handcrafted cocktails, and soulful vinyl. For more information and reservations, please call: +973 1751 7715

bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 TOP CHEFS 22 Culinary Balance MASTERED Chef Kevin De Guzman blends Japanese precision with Bahraini flavour at Gulf Hotel Bahrain. Here’s how his journey and philosophy are shaping Sato into a standout culinary destination. Mr. De Guzman’s path to the kitchen at Gulf Hotel Bahrain began with the realisation that cooking combined joy, purpose and performance. “It wasn’t love at first sight,” he says. “But getting paid to light stuff on fire and play with knives really worked for me in my 20s.” The adrenaline, movement and later intellectual intrigue pulled him deeper into the culinary world. His fascination with Japanese cuisine led him to study its principles – seasonality, detail and presentation. “Washoku is an art form,” he explains. A pivotal influence was Chef Naotaka Tokuhisa, who trained him in Bahrain in 2012. Despite expectations that he would not last a month, he stayed on for over four years and followed him to Gulf Hotel Bahrain’s Sato Japanese Restaurant, eventually becoming Head Chef. Mentorship from Chef Kazuo Takagi, a two-star Michelin chef, was equally formative. “He dared to break expectations,” recalls Mr. De Guzman, emphasising that inventiveness and tradition can coexist. He now passes on these lessons by encouraging his team to explore and experiment – just as his mentors did with him. At Sato, he maintains authenticity while presenting dishes in a modern style. His signature dish is Nigiri sushi, where rice, not the fish, takes centre stage. “The fish alone doesn’t carry the flavour. The sushi rice, dressed in a secret vinegar blend, is what makes it sing.” Bahrain’s rich culinary culture has deeply influenced Mr. De Guzman’s approach. “Respecting Japanese tradition while adjusting to the local palate is essential,” he says. The country’s love for bold spices and heritage dishes, such as machboos, has pushed him to refine his balancing act between authenticity and adaptation. Still, he insists: “Some dishes, like machboos, are perfect as they are.” He believes the Sa-Shi-Su-Se-So principle – sugar, salt, rice vinegar, soy sauce and miso – is fundamental. “It’s the starting point for building Japanese flavours. Get that right, and the rest follows.” Gulf Hotel Bahrain’s 16 restaurants reflect this ethos, combining global culinary traditions with innovative ideas. The hotel actively shaping the future of Bahrain’s food scene through collaboration, sustainability and culinary storytelling. His advice to home cooks? “Hard work never fails you. Just show up. Simple words, yet these nuggets of wisdom extend far beyond the confines of the kitchen. They are tools that I carry with me, shaping my approach to life’s challenges and opportunities. With each step forward, I am reminded that success is not solely measured by achievements but by the dedication and resilience demonstrated along the way.”

That’s the most rewarding moment. @chefyounis.bh bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 TOP CHEFS 27 Sergio Galaz EXECUTIVE CHEF Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour & SUSHISAMBA Bahrain Biggest inspiration in your culinary journey? Definitely my first job at a Japanese restaurant in Mexico City. It ignited a passion for Japanese cuisine that still shapes my cooking today – precision, philosophy and deep respect for ingredients. Signature dish? The Samba Manama Roll! It’s a flavourful fusion of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian influences, with a Bahraini twist. A true cultural mash-up that celebrates where we are and where we’ve been. Favourite local Bahraini ingredient? Dates! We use them in a rich reduction sauce for the Samba Manama Roll. They add a sweet, local touch to bold global flavours. Most memorable person you’ve cooked for? A young boy at a charity dinner. His joy and wonder with each dish reminded me why I love being a chef – it’s all about creating unforgettable moments. @Conradbahrain @sushisambabahrain

bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 28 DINING Charthouse Bahrain, nestled within Bahran Financial Harbour and managed by Areen Hospitality, has swiftly become a hotspot for diners seeking both comfort and culinary flair. Bahrain This Month had the opportunity to sample some of its delectable dishes. Watch the Video Global Plates, Local Warmth

bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 29 DINING The venue now hums with vibrant energy, offering a stylish yet welcoming atmosphere that suits casual meals and special occasions alike. Crafted with Care On a recent visit, we had the pleasure of sampling dishes that showcased both technical finesse and international creativity, all thanks to the skills of Executive Chef Abdelhameed Al-Mahsiri. With his warm personality and deep knowledge of global cuisines, Chef Abdelhameed leads a team that delivers not just great food, but a genuinely memorable experience. Classics with a Twist The feast began with a classic Rigatoni Carbonara – a dish that managed to strike a perfect balance between indulgence and refinement. Smoked turkey ham brought a subtle depth to the creamy carbonara sauce, while the duo of pecorino and Parmesan added a satisfying sharpness. It was hearty, familiar and elegantly executed. Fresh Flavours from the Mediterranean Next came the Mediterranean salmon, served on a bed of pesto fregola. The fish was cooked with precision, its crisped skin giving way to perfectly moist flesh. The fregola – a Sardinian pasta resembling large couscous – absorbed the herby pesto beautifully, making each bite burst with freshness and layered texture. A Bold Fusion Perhaps the most intriguing dish of the day was the sushi rice risotto with Mexican-style flame-grilled chicken – a bold culinary fusion that truly impressed. This unique creation brought together elements from Japan, Mexico and Italy in one cohesive plate. The sushi rice provided a soft, slightly sticky base, complemented by chicken marinated with three types of Mexican chilli, offering a smoky heat without overpowering the dish. The finish of Italian cheeses tied everything together in an unexpected harmony. It was executed to perfection and the team is already excited to come back for more. Throughout the meal, the attentive service and warm hospitality from the Charthouse team reinforced the sense that this is a place with heart. Under Chef Abdelhameed’s leadership, the kitchen isn’t afraid to innovate, but it never strays too far from what makes food enjoyable – comfort, balance and most of all, great taste. Charthouse Bahrain stands out not just for its globallyinspired menu, but for its atmosphere and people. It’s a place where flavours from across the world come together on the plate, and where guests are welcomed like old friends.

bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 FATHER’S DAY 33 Men Who Made Us Celebrating the Fatherhood has changed. No longer confined to the quiet, stoic figure in the background, today’s fathers are as hands-on as they are heartfelt, as involved as they are inspiring. From guiding first steps to giving wise advice, they’ve stepped up, leaned in and redefined what it means to be a dad. This Father’s Day, Bahrain This Month pays tribute to the fathers, father figures and mentors who shape our lives in big and small ways. Whether they’re fixing broken toys, sharing bedtime stories or leading by example in the toughest of moments, these men carry the quiet weight of responsibility with love and strength. In this special feature, we shine a light on the many faces of fatherhood in Bahrain. We’ve spoken to dads from all walks of life, entrepreneurs, artists, teachers, hoteliers and everything in between, to understand what being a father means to them in 2025. Their stories are candid, often humorous and deeply moving. They speak of the lessons they’ve learned from their children, patience, empathy and how to build LEGO castles under pressure. They talk about the joys of first words, the challenges of sleepless nights and the pride of watching their kids grow into their own. Most of all, they reflect on how fatherhood has changed them: made them softer, stronger, more present and more purposeful. For some, fatherhood began with late-night bottle feeds and learning how to swaddle. For others, it came later through mentorship or stepparenting. What binds them all is the desire to show up, day after day, even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard. We also celebrate the evolving role of dads in today’s families. Many now share responsibilities that were once considered the mother’s domain. They cook, clean, counsel and comfort. They’re visible in school pick-up lines, at weekend activities and on social media, showing the world that care has no gender. This feature is not just about celebrating biological fathers, but every man who has played a fatherly role, including grandfathers, uncles, brothers, friends, coaches and guardians. Their presence, guidance and love often go unnoticed, but not today. To every man who’s ever tightened a car seat, patched a scraped knee or offered words of support in a quiet moment: this one’s for you. Happy Father’s Day.

bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 FATHER’S DAY 34 Father's Day 2025 In 2025, fatherhood is evolving in remarkable ways. We spoke to six fathers in Bahrain who shared their personal journeys, challenges and what being a dad means in today’s world. Benoit Metanomski What does fatherhood in 2025 feel like to you? Fatherhood in 2025 is a wild, rewarding ride – equal parts guiding, learning and cherishing the little moments. I try to balance embracing tech with teaching values, empathy, and presence. Life’s short, so I focus on love, safety and creating joyful memories. What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a dad? Patience, active listening and putting away the phone! Being present – really present – matters. Kids are full of wisdom if you pay attention. I’ve learned to give them space to grow while being there 100 percent. In what ways have your children changed or taught you something unexpected? They’ve made me think beyond myself. Every choice now includes: “How does this impact the family?” From career moves to where we live, they’re my compass. How has living in Bahrain influenced your experience as a father? It’s been a mix of challenge and charm! Without extended family, we’ve built our own village. Bahrain’s culture and community have helped my kids grow into open, adaptable little humans. Darren Darwin What does fatherhood in 2025 feel like to you? It’s honestly a dream. My son’s five now, and after missing two years due to COVID and work travel, spending all of 2025 with him in Bahrain is the best. I take him to school daily, hang out on weekends – it’s amazing. Biggest lesson as a dad? Unconditional love, for sure. I’m a total softie – he gets away with everything! But seriously, it’s taught me patience and brought a love I never knew possible. Something unexpected your son has taught you? He’s cheeky, clever and full of personality. He’s taught me humility and to be even kinder. Plus, he’s hilarious – always playing tricks! How has Bahrain shaped fatherhood? Bahrain’s perfect – super family-friendly, loads of parks, sunshine and a great school. It’s honestly the best place I can imagine raising a child. Ilhan Anll What does fatherhood in 2025 feel like to you? It feels like juggling love, chaos and hope – trying to give my kids the best future in a wild world. Still, it’s a ride powered by resilience and heart. Biggest lesson as a dad? Patience! Learning to see life through their eyes has taught me to slow down and let them grow into themselves. How have your kids surprised you? They’ve shown me how truly different each child is. Their unique personalities mean parenting is never one-size-fits-all – and that’s a good thing. How has Bahrain shaped your fatherhood journey? Being an expat dad in Bahrain is tough at times – especially with family far away – but it’s made us closer. We’ve built our own traditions and tight-knit memories here.

bahrainthismonth.com | JUNE 2025 FATHER’S DAY 35 Nishad Eapen What does fatherhood in 2025 feel like to you? Fatherhood today feels like juggling tradition and tech. As a 45-year-old Indian dad in Bahrain, raising Nora and Dan means listening more, guiding gently and adapting fast. They’re growing up in a screen-filled, super-connected world, and while that worries me sometimes, I’m amazed by their confidence. Leena and I parent as a team – and now more than ever, our kids are part of that team too. Biggest lesson as a dad? Being present beats being perfect. Kids remember how you made them feel, not how flawless you were. What have your kids taught you? That strength isn’t always about control – it’s about being vulnerable, open and willing to grow. How has Bahrain shaped your parenting? Bahrain’s multicultural vibe has made me a more open, hands-on dad. It’s taught me home is about connection, not location. Pambavasan Nair What does fatherhood in 2025 feel like to you? It’s the best phase of life! It’s not just about being a parent anymore – it’s about being a friend. I’m proud my kids have grown into thoughtful, strong individuals. Credit to their mum, really – her constant presence let me focus on work without guilt. Biggest lesson as a dad? Parenting is a two-way street. I’ve learned with them and from them. Kids have the wildest questions – and now, amazing answers. I’m still learning. Always will be! Something unexpected they’ve taught you? Their calm thinking and judgment constantly impress me. Honestly, they’re like the upgraded ‘Dad 2.0.’ Makes me feel super proud. Has Bahrain shaped your parenting? Absolutely! Bahrain feels like home. We got the best of education, values and culture here. The warmth of the Bahraini community taught us – and our kids – what true brotherhood looks like. Sumit Jassal What does fatherhood in 2025 feel like to you? It’s a fun mix of old-school values and new-age parenting – guiding kids through tech-driven world while holding on to core values. What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a dad? Patience and being present are game-changers. That’s how my daughters feel truly supported. In what ways have your children changed or taught you something unexpected? They’ve brought back my sense of wonder. Their curious little questions get me thinking about life in new ways. How has living in Bahrain influenced your experience as a father? Bahrain’s been great – safe, rich in culture, and perfect for raising global kids while keeping our Indian traditions alive.
