Adriano and Karina: Love Beyond Borders
by: BTM - Sat, 01 Feb 2025
Adriano and Karina’s enduring love story include chance encounters, overcoming life’s challenges and celebrating the power of connection on a globetrotting adventure.
Adriano and Karina’s story began in 2010 at a wedding anniversary of mutual friends. At the time, Adriano led the personnel department in Brasília, while Karina was starting her career. “I was very impressed when he spoke about principles and values,” she says. “To be honest, I fell in love with him at first sight.” She joined his team in the foreign service, and their professional relationship soon blossomed into a lasting friendship and, eventually, love.
For the couple, marriage is “not a finish line, but a starting point.” Adriano compares it to “a canvas to which we add colours and lights, a painting in constant development.” Their wedding was a small, intimate affair held in a romantic historical town in Brazil with just 15 guests. They continue to mark milestones with equally personal celebrations, such as dining at a new Italian restaurant in Bahrain.
Though life has brought challenges, they approach each obstacle with resilience.
“Frustrations will pass, but we remain strong,” Karina says. Disagreements are resolved through “the power of forgiveness and the ability to laugh at ourselves.” Their contrasting personalities also serve as strengths. “One’s weakness is the other’s strength,” Karina explains. Adriano encourages her to be more active, while she helps him stay organised and patient. “We have become each other’s mentors,” she adds.
Despite demanding careers, they prioritise time together. While hobbies like playing guitar and ballroom dancing have been paused, they still enjoy shared activities such as reading, exercising and entertaining themselves. Recently, their little cat, Nessie, has brought additional joy to their lives.
Their Catholic faith has deeply shaped their relationship. “Our union is not just a contract, but a sacred bond,” Karina says. This belief has strengthened their long-term goals, ensuring they remain aligned. “Every couple should reconcile their life goals, always looking in the same direction.”
One of their defining moments came during a year apart, with Karina in Colombia and Adriano in Italy. Reuniting at Christmas confirmed the resilience of their bond. “Nothing had changed between us,” Karina says. Adriano reflects on the COVID-19 pandemic as another turning point: “The isolation that separated so many couples brought us even closer.”
The happy couple continue to add chapters to their romantic story in the Kingdom as they pursue their diplomatic roles at the Brazilian Embassy in Bahrain.
