Connecting Cultures, Building Futures

Our younger generation can gain valuable skills, build global perspectives and strengthen Bahrain-Japan relations.” - Nasser Al Arayedh

Since 2008, the Bahrain-Japan Business and Friendship Society (BJBFS) has bolstered ties between Bahrain and Japan. Its President, Nasser Al Arayedh, shares the organisation’s vision, successes and plans.

The Bahrain-Japan Business and Friendship Society (BJBFS) has been at the forefront of fostering economic and cultural ties between Bahrain and Japan since its inception in 2008. As President, Mr. Al Arayedh leads initiatives that enhance bilateral relations through organising events, facilitating business delegations and collaborating with Japanese counterparts. “I’ve been involved since day one,” he says. “Starting as Deputy President, I was later elected President and continue to work towards our shared goals.”

Initially established as the Bahrain-Japan Friendship Society, the organisation expanded its focus to include business in 2011. “Our goal is to strengthen bilateral relations by fostering friendship, understanding and cooperation across economic, cultural and social domains,” Mr. Al Arayedh explains. Over the years, BJBFS has grown into a platform for collaboration, with its vision firmly set on becoming a leading entity in these efforts.

The relationship between Bahrain and Japan dates back to the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972. Mr. Al Arayedh highlights the strong foundations of this partnership. “Bahrain-Japan relations are robust, characterised by significant governmental collaboration and vibrant grassroots interactions. Trade between our nations exceeded 197 billion Japanese Yen in 2023, with Japanese investments contributing to Bahrain’s energy sector.” Beyond commerce, cultural and educational exchanges have played a pivotal role in fostering mutual understanding.

BJBFS has been instrumental in bridging cultural and economic gaps. Recent initiatives include a virtual seminar, in partnership with JETRO, exploring the outlook of Japanese businesses in the Middle East. The society has also introduced Japanese expatriates to Bahrain’s rich heritage through historical tours of Manama and Muharraq, while visits to key facilities, such as the new Bahrain International Airport and Yokogawa’s industrial site in Hidd, have strengthened business relationships. “These initiatives reflect our commitment to fostering mutual understanding and collaboration,” he adds.

Opportunities for further collaboration between Bahrain and Japan are abundant. “Energy, particularly renewable resources, holds immense promise. Japan’s expertise in solar, wind and hydrogen technologies aligns with Bahrain’s clean energy goals,” he notes. He also points to sectors like technology, innovation, healthcare and education as fertile grounds for cooperation.

Cultural exchange remains a cornerstone of BJBFS’s mission. Through events like traditional Japanese workshops, educational exchanges and business-cultural integration activities, the society creates a platform for meaningful connections. “These efforts are vital for building long-term friendships,” Mr. Al Arayedh says.

Bahrain’s youth are encouraged to seize opportunities presented by BJBFS. Exchange programmes, internships and participation in cultural events offer avenues to engage with Japanese culture and technology. “Our younger generation can gain valuable skills, build global perspectives and strengthen Bahrain-Japan relations,” he emphasises.

In closing, Mr. Al Arayedh congratulates Japan on its National Foundation Day on February 11 and extends his gratitude to Bahrain’s leadership. “Their vision continues to strengthen Bahrain’s ties with Japan and beyond,” he concludes.
