If you need to visit a British embassy, high commission or consulate for support when you are abroad, you should make an appointment first. Call your nearest British embassy, high commission or consulate at any time, selecting the option 'Consular services for British nationals'.

A consulate is where consular services are performed. Embassies will normally have a consular section. While there will only one British embassy in the country you visit, there may be a number of consulates. These would usually be in cities with the most tourists.

You must provide a valid passport or other travel document with all applications and when travelling to the UK. Your passport must have at least 1 page blank if you use it to apply for a visa. Some passport holders may need to provide alternative evidence of their identity and nationality.
