Asako and Tomo: A Bond Strengthened by Love

From their first meeting on a golf course in Sri Lanka to navigating life’s challenges together, Asako and Tomo’s relationship highlights the importance of love, resilience and making time for what truly matters.

Asako and Tomo first met in Sri Lanka, where Tomo was running a business and Asako had just arrived as a diplomat. Tomo recalls the buzz in the Japanese community about the charming new diplomat, but it wasn’t until a golf competition that he got to know her. During the game, Asako struggled in a bunker, and her endearing expression, almost in tears, caught Tomo’s attention.

Asako found Tomo’s gentle nature soothing, especially as she often got too serious about her work. “Tomo has been a constant source of comfort,” Asako shares. “I appreciate him being close to me all the time.” He has followed her to various postings after their marriage, including to the Kingdom in her role as the Japanese Ambassador to Bahrain.

The couple share a love for golf and hot springs, which they believe strengthens their bond. They are members of the Royal Golf Club in Bahrain and enjoy playing golf together. Although Bahrain lacks hot springs, they make it a point to visit them in Japan whenever they return for their rejuvenating benefits. These activities not only provide physical exercise but also offer relaxation, contributing to their overall well-being.

A particularly poignant moment in their relationship was when Tomo was diagnosed with progressive cancer. Asako was working at the United Nations in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed her to work online from Tokyo and care for Tomo despite the 13-hour time difference. The timely detection and treatment of Tomo’s cancer were crucial, and he has since been in remission.

This experience underscored the importance of paying close attention to family health and acting swiftly when issues arise. Asako emphasises the significance of regular health check-ups and immediate action if any abnormalities are detected. “I am grateful for having met her, otherwise I am a dead man by now!” Tomo adds.
