Enduring Allies

For over 80 years, the United States and Bahrain have shared a strategic and enduring relationship rooted in diplomacy, defence and mutual respect. From early diplomatic ties to today’s extensive cooperation, the partnership continues to thrive across military, economic and cultural spheres.

The formal relationship between the United States and Bahrain began in 1947 with the establishment of Naval Support Activity Bahrain. Bahrain gained independence in 1971, and the two nations quickly established full diplomatic relations. Since then, the US Embassy in Bahrain has served as a hub for strengthening bilateral ties.

A cornerstone of this relationship is defence cooperation. Bahrain hosts the United States Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) and the Fifth Fleet headquarters, a vital command centre for operations across the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. Established in 1995, the presence of NAVCENT in Bahrain symbolises the trust and strategic alignment between both countries. This partnership supports regional security and maritime stability and serves as a key deterrent against shared threats.

Beyond defence, the US and Bahrain enjoy robust economic and educational ties. In 2006, Bahrain became the first Gulf nation to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States, boosting trade and investment. People-to-people connections have flourished through educational exchanges, English-language learning initiatives and cultural programmes hosted by the US Embassy.

Bahrain’s role as a moderate voice in the region and its commitment to reform and tolerance have positioned it as a valued partner. Today, US–Bahrain relations continue to evolve, anchored in shared values, strategic interests and an unwavering commitment to regional peace.

As both nations look to the future, their collaboration remains a model for enduring friendship and mutual progress.
