Osama Kamaluddin, Founder of The Forge CrossFit and Bahrain Throwdown, shares his inspiring journey of introducing CrossFit to the island, overcoming challenges and expanding the fitness community across the Kingdom.
When Osama first discovered CrossFit, it was a revelation. “I had tried bodybuilding and powerlifting since I was 16, but both felt repetitive and lacked innovation,” he recalls. “Then CrossFit came along, a sport that boosts fitness levels in every capacity. I got addicted because the results are quantifiable, you can measure your fitness and watch it improve.”
Bringing CrossFit to Bahrain wasn’t easy. “In the beginning, it was just a few guys doing the sport, not more than 20 for the whole year. But it grew through word of mouth, especially as it gained popularity in the GCC,” Osama says. Establishing The Forge Gym also presented its own hurdles. “The biggest challenge was the lack of support from the federation overseeing the sport. Keeping it accessible with unbeatable rates while covering costs was tough and maintaining a drama-free, positive environment required careful management,” he explains.
Despite these obstacles, Osama remained focused on his mission. “We change lives one person at a time, making them healthier and more confident. Coaching goes beyond the gym, it is about personal growth.”
Over the years, CrossFit’s presence in Bahrain has flourished. “It started as an exercise programme that people were sceptical about. Now, it dominates the fitness industry, proving its effectiveness with athletes excelling in various sports and securing podium finishes,” he notes. The recent expansion to Hamad Town marks a significant milestone. “We saw an opportunity in an untapped area and went for it. We quadrupled our member base – it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! It’s not just about business growth; it allowed me to hire more Bahraini coaches, strengthening our community,” Osama states proudly.
So, what sets The Forge apart? According to Osama: “We offer a comprehensive strength and conditioning programme that improves all 10 elements of fitness – from cardiovascular endurance to accuracy. Fitness isn’t just a buzzword here; we have the metrics to measure and improve it.” Experienced coaches guide athletes of all levels in every class, with no extra fees.
The Forge isn’t just a gym; it’s a community. “Group workouts foster social connections. We cheer each other on, push each other and ensure no one walks in without a friendly greeting,” Osama highlights.
For newcomers intimidated by CrossFit, he offers heartfelt advice: “I use my children as examples. My eight-year-old daughter and five-year-old son both do CrossFit. If they can do it, what’s stopping you? Nobody starts at the top. Everything is scalable and you work your way up.”
Looking to the future, Osama has ambitious plans. “My goal is to have a branch in every city. My team is experienced and ready to expand, growing the community across Bahrain.”
