Building a Strong Future

What distinguishes Bahrainis most is their kindness and generosity. As a Jordanian diplomat, Bahrain has been a welcoming second home for my family and me." - Rami Saleh Wreikat A1 Adwan

His Excellency Rami Saleh Wreikat Al Adwan, Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the Kingdom of Bahrain, discusses the enduring Jordan-Bahrain ties in this exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month.

Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down with us, Excellency. Firstly, can you tell us about your diplomatic career to date?
I am honoured to serve as the Jordanian Ambassador to Bahrain, building on my extensive experience in diplomacy, governance and youth development. Previously, I was the first Secretary General of the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, strengthening ties between legislative and executive authorities. I also chaired the Parties Affairs Committee under the 2015 Political Parties Law. I have held key roles, including Minister of Youth, Advisor to the Prime Minister and board member of major economic institutions. Before my diplomatic career, I served in the Jordanian Armed Forces. I hold a Master’s in Private Law and a Bachelor’s in Business Administration.

Jordan and Bahrain share strong historical ties. What is the current state of bilateral relations and how do you foresee their evolution in the coming years?
Jordanian-Bahraini relations are built on strong, brotherly ties, strengthened by HM King Abdullah II and HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Both nations share aligned visions on regional and international issues, particularly the Palestinian cause, advocating a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as Palestine’s capital. Looking ahead, their partnership is set to grow, with increased cooperation across economic, security and cultural sectors, achieving tangible progress on the ground.

What are the key areas of cooperation between Jordan and Bahrain, particularly in trade, investment and Fintech?
On January 5, 2023 we held the 5th session of the Jordanian-Bahraini Joint Higher Committee meetings in Manama, hosted by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. During this meeting many agreements were signed. Jordan this year, will host the 6th session of the Jordanian-Bahraini Joint Higher Committee meetings in Amman. Jordan and Bahrain have strong trade and investment ties, with an increasing focus on emerging sectors. Both nations recognise the importance of innovation and digital transformation in financial services.

Given the current geopolitical challenges in the region, how do Jordan and Bahrain collaborate on maintaining regional stability and security?
Stating from the special relations, both countries’ consultations regarding regional issues and challenges are regularly and openly discussed, and we share a high level of coordination in this regard. Jordan and Bahrain play a pivotal role in counterterrorism efforts and peacekeeping initiatives, additionally a key partner in ensuring maritime security and supporting regional defence alliances.

How has Jordan been actively involved in humanitarian efforts, particularly regarding refugees?
Jordan continues to uphold its humanitarian role, hosting a large number of refugees, which accounts for 30 percent of its population. The international community must bear its responsibility for refugees, as the most recent influx was the Syrian refugee crisis, with approximately 1.3 million refugees. This has increased pressure on Jordan’s economy, particularly concerning the unemployment rate among Jordanian youth. In addition to the pressure on the infrastructure and the natural resources especially for hosting communities.

Education and cultural exchanges play a significant role in strengthening relations between countries. Are there any new initiatives between Jordan and Bahrain to promote these fields?
Education and cultural ties between Jordan and Bahrain continue to strengthen through various agreements. The Executive Programme for Educational Cooperation (2023-2025) promotes collaboration in developing educational systems, exchanging expertise in education technology and enhancing cooperation in higher education and research. In 2023 and 2024, Jordan’s Ministry of Education recognised seven new Bahraini institutions, including Bahrain University College, the American University of Bahrain and the British University of Bahrain. Previously recognised universities include the University of Bahrain, Arabian Gulf University and RCSI Bahrain. These efforts reinforce the strong educational and research partnerships between both nations, fostering deeper academic and cultural collaboration.

If a Bahraini visitor were to visit Jordan for the first time, what are the top three places or experiences you would recommend?
Jordan offers a wealth of must-visit destinations, complemented by the warm hospitality of its people. Amman, the vibrant capital, blends history with modern culture, featuring landmarks like the Citadel and Roman Theatre. Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases stunning rock-cut architecture, while Wadi Rum’s desert landscapes offer adventure and Bedouin hospitality. Visitors can also experience the serene waters of the Dead Sea and Red Sea, explore the historic ruins of Um Qays, and visit the sacred Baptism Site at the Jordan River.

As Bahrain’s longest-standing diplomat, how have your family settled here and enjoyed spending a major part of their lives here?
What distinguishes Bahrainis most is their kindness and generosity. As a Jordanian diplomat, Bahrain has been a welcoming second home for my family and me. Over the years, we have built strong friendships and embraced the warm hospitality of its people. The country’s diverse culture, vibrant community and family-friendly environment have made our experience truly enriching. We have enjoyed exploring Bahrain’s heritage, engaging in community events and forming meaningful connections that we will always cherish.
