by: BTM - Mon, 12 May 2025
From record-breaking achievements in sport and film to pioneering transport solutions and world-class tourist attractions, Bahrain is embracing a bold and innovative future. This special roundup captures key developments happening right now across the Kingdom.
SURFING TOWARDS 2026
Set to open in late summer 2026, Bahrain Surf Park – Club Hawaii Experience will be the region’s first surf destination using Wavegarden Cove technology, capable of producing up to 1,000 customisable waves per hour.
Developed by Edamah, in partnership with GFH Financial Group, the surf park will feature a cutting-edge artificial wave system capable of producing up to 1,000 waves per hour. The unique underwater topography of the surf lagoon allows for customisable wave patterns, catering to all skill levels, from beginners to elite athletes seeking up to two-metre high waves. The freshwater lake itself, an equivalent area to four football pitches, will accommodate up to 90 surfers every hour, providing a new water sports activity for those wanting to have a try, and a thrilling and dynamic environment for water sports enthusiasts.
With family zones, cabanas, rooftop terraces, food and beverage outlets and a dedicated Club Hawaii Surf Academy, the park aims to be a full-fledged lifestyle and recreational destination. General Manager Victoria Williams, a seasoned expert with two decades of experience in leisure operations, says: “This is a world-class destination where sport, recreation and community come together.”
Adding to the excitement, an international surfing competition is already planned for the inaugural season.

AIRPORT ART ELEVATES TRAVEL
Bahrain International Airport has become more than a gateway – it is now a platform for cultural expression. Newly installed glass art throughout the terminal offers travellers a striking visual experience, blending traditional Gulf motifs with contemporary design. The artworks, created by both regional and international artists such as Sir Brian Clarke, demonstrate Bahrain’s commitment to integrating creativity into everyday life.
The installations serve as more than decoration. For Bahraini citizens, they are a symbol of national pride and cultural sophistication. For visitors, they offer an immediate and memorable introduction to the country’s artistic depth. Bahrain’s terminal has set itself apart, reinforcing the idea that infrastructure can be both functional and inspiring.
NEW CURRENTS IN TRANSIT
Bahrain has introduced a Water Taxi service connecting coastal destinations across the island. This new mode of transport not only eases traffic congestion but also reflects a renewed appreciation for the Kingdom’s maritime heritage. With modern interiors and scenic views, the water taxis offer a pleasant, efficient way to travel while reinforcing sustainable and innovative urban planning.
Complementing this initiative, the Bahrain Swimming Challenge recently took place, attracting elite regional athletes and spectators to the island’s shores. The event, staged along Bahrain’s picturesque coastline, showcased the country’s ability to host high-calibre sporting competitions. Together, these developments represent a forward-thinking approach to integrating infrastructure, leisure and environmental awareness.
BAHRAIN’S STARTUP SURGE
Bahrain’s performance in the 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Index – ranking fourth in the Middle East and 67th globally – underscores its growing reputation as a hub for innovation. The Kingdom has made significant strides in cultivating a business environment that attracts entrepreneurs in FinTech, logistics, health tech and sustainable energy.
Startups benefit from a supportive infrastructure that includes accelerators such as Bahrain FinTech Bay and access to government-backed funding. At the same time, investor confidence remains high. Property ownership by GCC nationals rose sharply in 2024, with Kuwaiti investors particularly active. This growth reflects Bahrain’s appeal as a stable and accessible base for regional investment.
These trends are the result of long-term policy decisions aimed at creating a balanced and open economy. Bahrain’s emphasis on transparency, low entry barriers and digital infrastructure is positioning the country as an attractive destination for both business and quality living.
CINEMATIC BREAKTHROUGH
Bahraini filmmaker Omar Farooq (@omr94) has received international acclaim for his documentary The Dark Side of Japan, which won the Golden Palm Award for Best Documentary at the 2025 Saudi Film Festival. The film offers an unflinching look at societal challenges in Japan, such as addiction and isolation, brought to life through a patient and empathetic narrative style.
Farooq’s success marks a significant moment for Bahrain’s cultural sector. While the country has long contributed to regional media, global recognition at this level is rare.
This achievement serves not only as personal recognition but also as validation of Bahrain’s creative potential on the international stage.
It also highlights the growing need for investment in independent cinema and the arts. Platforms like the Saudi Film Festival are offering Bahraini creatives the exposure they deserve, and Farooq’s work may inspire a new generation of filmmakers to pursue bold, honest storytelling.
FOOTBALL GLORY ACHIEVED
Al Khalidiya SC secured its first HM The King’s Cup title with a victory over Sitra Club, delivering a performance that will be remembered as a defining moment in Bahraini football. The final was marked by tactical discipline and determination, culminating in a well-earned triumph.
The cup was presented by HH Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, whose presence underscored the royal family’s ongoing support for national sport.
For Al Khalidiya SC, the win is the result of focused development and effective leadership, elevating the club’s status in the domestic football scene.
Beyond the trophy, the impact has been felt across the Kingdom. The team’s journey has inspired younger athletes and energised the local fanbase, proving that ambition and perseverance can yield exceptional results. As the 2024-2025 season draws to a close, Al Khalidiya stands not just as a champion, but as a symbol of what Bahraini sport can achieve.
